How AI Overviews Are Killing Your Click-Through Rate (and What to Do)

Google's "Search Generative Experience" (SGE)—now known as AI Overviews—is the biggest change to the web since the smartphone.
For many years, the goal was simple: Rank #1, get the click.
But now, for nearly half of all searches, Google provides a comprehensive AI-written answer right at the top. The user gets what they need without ever visiting a website. These are called Zero-Click Searches.
The Problem: The "Click Gap"
If you rank #1 for "How to maintain a furnace in winter," but Google AI explains all the steps in a neat box at the top, your traffic for that keyword will drop—even if you're still in that top spot.
The Solution: Become the Source
While AI Overviews might "steal" some clicks, they are also a massive opportunity. Every AI Overview includes citations—links to the sources it used to generate the answer.
If your link is one of the three featured in that AI box, you aren't just a search result; you are the Vetted Authority.
3 Strategies to Fight Back
1. Focus on "Commercial Intent"
AI is great at answering informational questions ("How to..."). It’s less likely to steal clicks for commercial intent ("Best HVAC repair Brampton"). Focus your SEO efforts on keywords that require a human to take an action or view a specific service.
2. The "Nugget" Strategy
Structure your articles with "Knowledge Nuggets"—short, punchy, 40-word sections that provide a clear answer to a specific question. Google AI loves to grab these nuggets and cite the source.
3. Build a "Brand Beyond Search"
If people don't find you on Google, where else can they find you?
- Email Marketing: Owned audience that isn't subject to algorithm shifts.
- Social Media: Building a community that searches for you by name.
- AI Chatbots: Capturing the users who do land on your site so they never have to go back to Google.
Don't Panic, Pivot
The web isn't dying; it’s just getting smarter. Businesses that adapt to being cited by AI will thrive. Those that continue to wait for the "blue links" to return will be left behind.
